LTFB (2007): What a shame we all became such fragile broken things.
Part II (2013): What a shame we all remain such fragile broken things.
TERAZ ROCK (04/2013) - Paramore for the first time on the cover of the biggest polish rock magazine. Interview with Taylor York.
“High school drama” - Paramore’s musicians today are joking about sudden events from three years ago. The truth is that the group found itself on the edge of the collapse that time. However they recovered and moving in the new direction on the album entitled just “Paramore”.
Introduction refers to the band’s history, Farro brothers departure and recording the new album. The interview doesn’t show anything new or suprising, but not often Taylor says so much.
Things that we find out from telephone interview with Taylor who was that time in Berlin:
PS. Sorry for grammar and spelling mistakes!

Thanks to a song from “Twillight” soundtrack they gained international acclaim. But as often happens - success creates conflicts. After a row by which two found members have departed the band, the american group Paramore returns with a new album. The album named “Paramore” is going to be released 9th April. It will be their 4th album. Currently Paramore is: red-haired firecracker Hayley Williams on vocals, the oldest in the band bassist Jeremy Davis and young guitarist Taylor York. This team has formed on the beginning of 2011 after a fight, what questioned future of the band. Suddenly from Paramore departed brothers Josh and Zac Farro: guitarist and drummer, co-founders of Paramore, having a key influence on sound of the band. Farro brothers in series of really bitter statements and opinions announced that Paramore has become a product controlled by the record label, and Hayley Williams is treated with special, superstar conditions.
Among others, about brothers departure, but the most about the new album: Michał Michalak talked with Jeremy Davis.
Why did you titled the record with the band’s name?
Jeremy Davis, Paramore: We always have problem with title of the album. Figuring out it takes us a lot of time. Working on the newest songs, we fell in love with them more than any of the previous albums. We had long discussion on which title would show in the best way our attitude towards this album. Hayley came up with the idea to name the album “Paramore”. Our reaction was instant: perfect! This title is something like determined statement that this album represents who we are. For the first time we feel that the album fully represents music of our band.
What would you name a direction what you’ve chosen on the album?
Eclectic. This album is much more varied than previous ones. I feel like everyone will find their “own” song on it. We show various styles, also ones what we’ve never been suspected to make.
Would you call Paramore an alternative band, considering your popularity and music what you perform right now?
Yes. We still play rock or alternative rock. It’s important for us. That’s why we’ve chosen “Now” for a single, which is a rock song. There have always been a difference between how we sound like on album and how on the show. If you’ll come to our concert you’d experience a real rock show.
I’ve been to your show in Warsaw.
You see. Although recording an album, we don’t try to give concerts’ atmosphere in a scale of one to one. Hayley composes a lot of pop melodies, really catchy themes. On the record you’ll still find a lot of strong guitars, but there’s also a full spectrum: soft compositions, folk and also more hardcore.
Let’s go back to December 2010 for a moment. What really happend between you, Hayley and Farro brothers?
I think it’s pretty simple. They started to not feel good in the band, they’ve lost passion. A lot of bands deal with internal problems. We had this luck that we’ve succeeded on fix them and start over again. A lot of bands in such situation would say: hey, let’s end it, end the career. But me, Hayley and Taylor still had this passion, we didn’t want to disappoint our fans too. We wanted to send a clear signal: we don’t reject Paramore’s achievements and future. The fact that our two ex friends lost passion and enthusiasm along the way, doesn’t mean that the same thing happened to us.
Is Hayley difficult to live with?
(laugh) Good question. The answer is: no, definely not. A lot of people think that Hayley acts like a diva, but this isn’t true. She’s on of the coolest girls that i’ve ever met and in addition she’s incredibly smart, creative and talented. She’s accompanied by the greatest media attention in our band, but actually this is a really young girl, who likes to make music. No, she doesn’t have a hard character.
When you write songs in current composition - who is responsible of what?
We all took part in making the new album, but the most of ideas came from Taylor and Hayley of course took care of lyrics. In case of this album we’ve got carried away by songs, we wanted every single one to shine its own light, we were avoiding getting into previously developed schemes of creating. That’s why this record is so eclectic.
Why haven’t you employed any drummer permanently?
Yes, we have a problem with this. The guy who played on the album is Ilan Rubin and he’s amazing. We really wanted to have him in the team but sadly he’s busy, he has a lot of commitments. This is a reason why we still don’t have a drummer.
Are you going to exist as a trio after the album release?
Even if we’ll employ someone, that person won’t become a full member of the band due to the dedication that is required to be in our band. Any change in the group is difficult to accept for the fans, because they get attached to the individual musicians and their personalities.
You are often regarded as a band for teens. Is it irritating?
I know that many artists complain, they say: damn, we would like our fans to be older, more matured. We don’t say such things. Most of all i don’t think that this is true according to Paramore. Young fans in fact catch out energy, especially on the concerts. This connection is really important to us. Although i think that the new album will get attention of bit older listeners.
How have you changed through all those 10 years of performing?
We started to make a career at a very young age. It is known that it affects you. Changes not only your life, but also your personality. Along the years this process continues. But it’s okay. Changes are good. 10 years is a long time. However, I feel that I still keep in the same power that at the beginning of the road. A personality yet always changing, even if you’re doing something completely different than we are.
Which moment was the turning point in the career of Paramore? Most listeners probably would say “Twilight” and “Decode”.
Thanks to “twilight” and “Decode” we have gained enormous publicity. However, the defining moment is always the release of the album. Every time. It’s always the reference point for us. So now we believe that this latest album will be moving one level higher.
Your three favourite Paramore’s singles.
Woah, hard question. Favourite on albums or live?
Let’s say: live.
It probably wouldn’t be singles. We play them so many times!
Are you bored of the greatest hits?
- (Laughs) It’s not like this. We have fun playing popular numbers. People always react strongly to them, it gives you a kick. I like to play “Misery Business”, recently we started to invite fans onto the stage, great deal, it gives concerts entirely different dimension. I would point to a “Decode” and “Monster”.
Okay, these were singles. How about non-singles?
We have a song called “Let The Flames Begin,” which I love to perform live. Mainly because at the end we go to a jam session, and each time is different.
Do you remember the show in Warsaw in 2011?
Oh yes. We met with fans before the show and it was a really great meeting. After sound check we had time to explore. I really enjoyed it there, the city unlike other European cities.
Will you perform again here?
We definitely want to and certainly plan to. There are plenty of places on our list, we have a whole bunch of responsibilities connected with the promotion of the album. That is why I am not able to tell you when it will happen, but we will definitely return.
